Cereza Silvestre harmonizes a modernist aesthetic with a rustic country setting. The program from the client called for a "nod to modernism that didn't look out of place" in this hillside high desert country location. This mountain modern design employs clerestory windows and a light steel frame supported with heavy timbers atop a rough stone block retaining wall foundation that nestles the house into the gentle slope of the site. Exterior walls are clad in rough stone and rust patina steel and are topped by high bands of windows allowing the horizontal lines of the flat roof to float over the spaces. The various planes of the roofs feature black steel flashing and stained wood ceilings inside and out. A careful combination of material choice and contemporary aesthetic sets Cereza Silvestre synergistically into the landscape.
The desire for dynamic views to the South Southeast in as many rooms as possible was best achieved by providing each of the spaces with a corner of the room projecting into the view shed. The result is a somewhat zigzag facade to the SSE. This provided the opportunity for corner window units in each of the various interior spaces thereby bringing each space into the landscape in ways that flat singular window views cannot.
The Cereza Silvestre design is repeated in a 5 house neighborhood complex. Each house is provided with a generous outdoor patio that also reaches into the view shed. The patio space is defined by rough stone retaining walls that rise from the descending topography below providing level building sites for the homes, privacy from neighbors and a means to truly live within the surrounding landscape and mountain views.
